Born From Cutting Edge Research
Axon Optics is a high tech startup formed after a neuro-ophthalmologist, photonics researcher, and ophthalmic entrepreneur got together during the summer of 2010 to help people with photosensitive migraine by using the latest research performed at the University of Utah’s Moran Eye Center.
The first line of products was based upon FL-41 glasses and launched in June 2011. Improvements to the lenses and frames have been ongoing. Research performed at the University of Utah and other clinics led to the development of the Avulux® Migraine and Light Sensitivity lens.
27 years of clinical experience
Neuro-ophthalmologist and scientist Dr. Bradley Katz has been treating light-sensitive patients at the University’s Moran Eye Center since 1995. When not treating patients, Dr. Katz is researching why light causes pain, and his work has resulted in peer-reviewed publications and speaking engagements at many neurological conferences. He and his colleagues understand how light sensitivity affects people’s work, family, and social activities.
Dr. Katz’s interactions with patients and his technical research on photophobia result in valuable feedback. This knowledge is funneled into lens and frame innovation to meet the needs of those with light sensitivity.

Avulux® Migraine & Light Sensitivity Lenses Are Clinically Proven
The 2020 Avulux lens study conducted with episodic migraine patients resulted in clinical and statistical significance. Axon Optics glasses are powered by Avulux lenses.
Axon Optics Joins The Avulux Family
In an ongoing effort to offer the migraine community the best in light management. Axon Optics joined the Avulux family – offering the best in precision light filtering lens technology to its customers.
Meet Our Light Management Experts
Nestled at the edge of the Rocky Mountains, our team is either conducting groundbreaking research at a nearby facility or making discoveries in our engineering department or helping people who have light sensitivity find the right solution.
Charles Posternack, MD
President & CEO
Dr. Posternack has been in the healthcare world for more than 30 years, most of which was spent as a senior healthcare executive. As a result of this experience, he has become an expert in value-based care. As a co-founder of Avulux and its President, he has utilized these skills to bring one of the most important medical advances addressing light sensitivity and migraine. He received his medical degree and conducted his specialty training at McGill University in Canada. He has lived in the USA since 1992 and has held leadership positions at the Cleveland Clinic, HCA Healthcare, and was an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University.
Bradley Katz, MD, PhD
Founder and Chief Scientist
Dr Katz specializes in neuro-ophthalmology and evaluates patients with diseases that affect the optic nerve, diseases that affect eye movements and neurologic diseases that affect vision. Dr. Katz’s research interests include photophobia and neurologic conditions. Dr. Katz is a tenured Professor in the Dept of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and holds an Adjunct appointment in the Department of Neurology at the University of Utah.
