History of Light Filtering Technologies

Backed by Science: The History Behind Eyeglasses for Light Sensitivity

“We all know someone who has sought out a dark room to try to deal with the symptoms of migraine. I have seen these patients in my practice over the past 29 years, and as a researcher, I have worked to understand light sensitivity in order to develop therapies that can help improve their quality of life. Avulux is the only lens that has undergone clinical trial testing to show that it’s effective in reducing the pain associated with light sensitivity and migraine.” – Dr. Bradley Katz, M.D., PhD, professor, researcher, neuro-ophthalmologist at the University of Utah Medical Center, and co-founder of Axon Optics

For more than a decade, Axon Optics has been trusted by people looking to manage the impact of light on their lives. And with good reason: we have always been focused on the latest scientific and clinical research designed to precisely filter harmful light linked to migraine attacks.

More than 80 percent of people with migraine are affected by light sensitivity which either triggers or worsens their attacks, and our priority is to help them get back to the lives they love. This why we offer the first and only clinically proven lens on the market for light sensitivity and migraine: Axon Optics Powered by Avulux Migraine & Light Sensitivity Lenses.

These lenses are built on a long history of cutting-edge innovation, led by researchers at the pre-eminent Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. Here’s the story of the scientific and clinical research that underpins Axon Optics.

In the Beginning: FL-41 Glasses

For several decades, the Moran Eye Center has studied the use of FL-41, rose-colored tinted glasses for light sensitivity first developed for people affected by fluorescent lights and migraine. And, during much of that time, FL-41 was the go-to for those experiencing light sensitivity and migraine. FL-41 glasses predominantly filter blue light – but we now know there is no scientific evidence that blue-blocking glasses can help with migraine attacks or other light-sensitive conditions.

A 2010 study found that blue light is not the only culprit when it comes to light sensitivity and migraine. Red and amber light can also be harmful, while green light can be soothing. Then, in 2011, Dr. Katz and his colleagues at the Moran Eye Center researched and patented an alternative to FL-41 that more effectively blocks the wavelengths of light that can cause discomfort.

Clinically Proven Light Sensitivity Glasses

This lens technology was later licensed from the University of Utah and became what is now known as Avulux.

So how do Axon Optics Powered by Avulux Migraine & Light Sensitivity Lenses differ from FL-41, sunglasses, blue light glasses, and other tinted glasses for light sensitivity? Our lens doesn’t distort color, it’s comfortable, and it is the only migraine lens to ever be proven effective at the highest standard of clinical testing. This provides clear scientific evidence that Avulux lives up to its claims of blocking the most harmful wavelengths of light while letting in soothing green light.
